Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The way the different tenses, time jumps and characters all intertwined and developed within such a short amount of pages was really enjoyable. Each time I stopped reading I wanted to read more. The plot is brilliant because even though I think I’ve sussed the way the story is going to go Jemisin has a way of completely altering where I think the story will go. Even with the predictable aspects of the book it didn’t take away any enjoyment. The only reason I haven’t given a 5 star is due to the fact that the first half is bit of a context hit and the second half feels like it’s prepping you for the rest of the trilogy. Now I don’t find this to be off putting at all as it’s made me excited for the next two however I just don’t quite think it’s on Sword of Kaigen level however it’s a very good read and one of my favourite this year. I love the characters including their flaws and I cannot wait to find out where the story ends up. So much I want to know about the past and the present to Essun’s story. Very happy I finally read it.

Even though the beginning was slow, I found my investment in this story. World and character building was amazing.

I started out rolling my eyes at some of the all-pervasive in-universe terms being used, but I genuinely loved this and was 100% sold on it by the end. The unique premise and backdrop are really enthralling and I am frustrated and excited in equal measure (in a good way) to find there are two more books in the series to read. If you like sci-fi, post apocalyptic settings, and rich world building with deep, well thought out lore, you too will enjoy this!
