[The Graveyard Book - Neil Gaiman → ☆☆.5]

4/5

Neil Gaiman has so much imagination, and writes great stories. Loved the book. A story of hope and courage and living.

A book that will probably end up as one of my all-time favourites, The Graveyard Book is a beautiful swirl of family, magic, mystery and danger. Neil Gaiman once again knocks my socks off with a story that’s heartwarming and spooky, with a touch of the bittersweet. I can’t even begin to articulate how much I loved it. Please do yourself a favour and read The Graveyard Book!

Shoutout to the police officer who probably went the rest of his life thinking he killed a man in front of his son.

One upside to being sick is that it gave me an excuse to finish this odd little book. Reading Gaiman's prose is like being led through a playful maze - or perhaps a "goony golf" course is more apt. I just loved the way the story spilled out onto the page. And the delight of the tale is not at all burdened by Gaiman's expert application of thematic subtext and other oft-neglected writer's tricks once discussed in language arts classrooms. This one definitely goes down as a Favorite.

I really enjoyed this book. While I will grant you that there are some flaws - for instance, I wish the details of the mystery/conspiracy were more clear and we had a better idea of why Bod is so important - I still found the story quite fun to read and the characters very interesting.

The illustrations also added another dimension to the book, enhancing the feeling of living somewhere between life and death.
