I "discovered" Anthony Horowitz this summer when someone gave us all the "Foyle's War" dvds and we enjoyed them. Currently I am in the midst of watching through "Midsomer Murders," which Horowitz helped create, adapting them from Caroline Graham's books.
I was intrigued by the idea of this "mystery inside a mystery" and was not sure I would be able to last through this long a book. But it does read quickly though it is complicated like a 3-D puzzle. Susan Ryeland, a mystery book editor, is called from her life co-managing a hotel in Greece to discover what clues were hidden in a book she edited which was based on an eight-year-old-now murder and has led to a recent disappearance. Susan is missing her life in England and comes back to track down clues, interviewing folks from then and now, and re-reading and analyzing the book (hence, the book within a book). Lots of references to British mysteries old and new (and Shakespeare) and a few likeable characters amidst all those who have unsavory secrets to hide. Horowitz seems to have a mind for murder and puzzles . . .

So clever. Love the murder mystery within a murder mystery and trying to work out all the links, anagrams and clues. Can't wait for the TV series after they made such a good job of Magpie Murders.

I haven’t read many murder mysteries, so I don’t have much of a basis for comparison, but I liked this book. I found it hard to predict who the killer was though I was definitely trying!
In the beginning, I was a little surprised that the story is narrated by a female. I didn’t particularly get a female vibe from the way they constructed their thoughts and sentences. But the beginning is so much about setting the scene, and as the story went on it flowed much better.
I liked the book within the book concept. Bookception.
All in all, I’d recommend it. It was slow and a little clunky in the beginning, but that could be because it was describing locations and cars that I know nothing about.

"Pund bowed discreetly and left her to her ministrations, reflecting that she might also have considered praying for herself. He left the church and stood outside in the bright sunlight, surrounded by the graves. From here he could see Church Lodge and the window from which Samantha Collins had noticed Melissa James. He smiled to himself. He should perhaps believe in the power of the church more. "
Moonflower Murders
Susan Ryeland 2
Anthony Horowitz
Cornerstone Digital

I did manage to figure out a key part of the mystery but still an enjoyable read and I will read more Susan Ryeland murder mysteries.

A solid 3.49 stars! I dig the mystery within a mystery trope in this series.
However, I really don’t like Susan Ryland very muc and find her sections of the book far less compelling. That was the case for me in the first installment in the series, but the story in book 1 was better. It seems like this book went out of its way to be complicated as opposed to creating interesting characters.
