This series is so clever. I love the book within a book format. I thought I had everything tied up in a neat little bow and was feeling very happy with myself and then the rug was pulled out from underneath me.

Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is living the good life. She is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend Andreas. It should be everything she's always wanted. But is it? She's exhausted with the responsibilities of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, and truth be told she's beginning to miss London.

And then the Trehearnes come to stay. The strange and mysterious story they tell, about an unfortunate murder that took place on the same day and in the same hotel in which their daughter was married—a picturesque inn on the Suffolk coast named Farlingaye Halle—fascinates Susan and piques her editor’s instincts.

This was very long and, as with Magpie Murders, is a book within a book. In fact I wish I'd refreshed my memory on my review of Magpie Murders as I'm not sure I'd have embarked on this if I had. Reading the same mystery twice, searching for clues from one to solve the other, is perhaps not for me - plus I really don't like Pund (as I don't like Poirot). Having said that I still quite enjoyed the book.

It went on FOREVER and the "book within a book" mechanism was too much. But, despite that it was an OK story.

A clever, elegantly-plotted book that pulls off the feat of being better than its predecessor and all with a heroine to root for. Well done!

I guessed who it was about halfway through which made me happy

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, The Magpie Murders. This was equally fun. It is a nook within a book with lots of easter eggs and word play. Figure it out or not- either way you’ll enjoy the book.
