I don't know how Morowitz comes up with these mysteries, so intricately layered and folded in in each other. He is truly a master of the genre. These books aren't (for me) life-changing, but they are absolutely top tier entertainment and very well written. I enjoy the main protagonist and how the author doesn't focus on her physical appearance but rather her inner landscape and thought processes. She doesn't feel one-dimensional and I appreciate the character development in regards to her relationships with her partner and her sister.

*There are many mentions of cigarette smoking in these books.. those sensitive to the topic or trying to quit may want to avoid reading.

This sequel encouraged a fondness within me for the protagonist, Susan Ryland. I didn’t enjoy her story as much in Magpie Murders. In fact, in the first book, I ended up enjoying the Atticus Pund story more. However, in Moonflower Murders, I got to know and care more about Susan, her thoughts and experiences.

Two many characters, too manipulative and one too many books. The “book within a book” device was interesting in Magpie Murders - now it’s just irritating. Not for me.
