It did take me a long time to read this, but that’s not because it was a bad book. I loved it and especially the last like 70 pages were going by so quickly

I wanted to love it but overall I felt it was meh. It could be because of my own high expectations because of all the hype but I thought it was anti-climatic. This could also be because I knew 2 of the more major moments that are revealed at the end. I wanted to read it before watching the show and I did so I’m interested to see the changes they made.

I appreciate the concept, I like the interview style with the band and having a candid view into the casual use of drugs in the 70s

I personally didn’t feel a connection with any of the characters - i feel like all of them (except maybe Camila) spoke the same and didn’t feel too well rounded. I also didn’t believe in Billy and Daisy’s chemistry, with it being essential to understand their emotional affair. Daisy is meant to be someone who is troubled by the drugs, but the complete disregard to the fact that Billy is married while she falls in love didn’t land for me. I generally didn’t believe in the star charisma of Billy and Daisy, along with the chemistry of the band. I also wish they were a band longer than basically a year, just so things had more time to “crumble” apart.

I did like that all their songs are written and left in the back of the book.

The audiobook was PHENOMENAL— the cast of voices was great, and it was fun to try to piece together what actually happened based on a bunch of unreliable narrators. I was a bit disappointed with the actual reasons for the band breaking up— I thought it would be because of something more shocking or scandalous.  But I guess it speaks to the themes of love, heartbreak, family, and growth that are essentially at the core of so many great stories.

I really enjoyed the last pages of the book. As a hopeless romantic but commitment enthusiast, I believe that the work put into
Camila and Billy regardless of Billy’s feelings towards DJ is inspiring and memorable. A marriage is more of an everyday decision than a perfect fairytale story
. The writing of Aurora album seemed a little bit repetitive for me
but it was great at building tension verween DJ and BD. The “twist” at the end of the author being Julia Dunne didn’t do much for me, but was an interesting concept. Would’ve loved to have a bit of the conversation of BD and DJ after Camila’s email.
