A slightly novel approach to WWII fiction with a couple of surprises that build as the novel progresses.

Kate is a flight nurse, caring for military personnel as they are flown to safety.  She meets and falls in love with William, but the war tears them apart again when news from Kate's past reaches her.

This felt overly long and slow-winded at times, and the author desperately needed a native German speaker to correct the terrible translation, but ultimately an interesting take on the WWII tropes.

This book was so well written. I loved following this story. I really enjoyed the dual timeline. It’s hard to believe people lived this way. There were definitely tears shed during this one.

The Lies We Leave Behind is a sweeping and heartbreaking WWII novel. Kate, a flight nurse, although determined to do her job without distractions, meets and falls in love with an injured soldier, William. After he recovers from his injuries, he returns to the front and she gets some news about her sister in the heart of Germany that causes her to embark on a dangerous journey to try to bring her back to safety.

There is so much more to this story but without giving too many spoilers, I will just say that this story covers is much territory and describes the horrors that occurred during that time period.

There is a dual POV in multiple timelines as we are introduced to William in 2003 and return back to Kate in 1944. The writing style worked for me in this case, as it served as a way to tease out some of the stories main developments. I also loved learning more about the flight nurses’ job and the contributions of these brave women during the war.

Like most WWII stories, there are multiple devastating losses but also many beautiful redeeming moments.

I really like this author but this wasn't my fave of theirs. I also despise the narrator. She does this weird breathy thing at the end of her sentences while also having vocal fry.....grated on my nerves. I only finished as I needed something to read and liked this author.

So heartbreaking, yet so wonderful! If you're a fan of WWII fiction, you know how that goes. Another brilliant story from Noelle Salazar!
