This topic has been on my mind, as we have a relative with dementia that we regularly visit, so I thought the smallest member of the family might be interested in this book.

We read the book tonight for the first time. The illustrations are clear with almost no backgrounds. The figures are adorable, which helped catch and keep the small person's eye. The text was friendly and honest, and includes at the back a helpful list of things that the reader can try to do.

At one point, Doctor Bear explains in very simple terms what is happening to Grandpa Bunny and then suggests things that grandbunny Ben could do to help: spend time with Grandpa Bunny; have some fun with Grandpa Bunny; show Grandpa Bunny how much Ben cares. At this point the smallest member of my household chimed in with their own observations and understanding of dementia, arguing that none of those things will fix Grandpa Bunny because they have tried those things with our family member. I pointed out that Doctor Bear mentioned they can't fix Grandpa Bunny but there is a difference between making someone better and making someone feel better. This explanation satisfied the child.

The smallest member of the household enjoyed the book, and the book even inspired a discussion on an important topic, so this book gets a thumbs up from us.
