This book has an interesting world and premise, and I will be honest I’m writing this review about a month after I finished it, but when I sat down I was hard-pressed to remember anything about it for a couple minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t too invested in the main romance between Wren and Lei; I loved that it was sapphic relationship representation and the unique concept of two consorts falling for each other had me greatly anticipating, but something about the way the author wrote it from Lei’s pov didn’t strike with me…I also wished that we had gotten more time with their friendship and bond developing before it becoming romance/attraction. Our main character’s relationship with Aoki was super interesting, though, and I enjoyed seeing it shift throughout the book. This was a fun read, although based on where it leaves you hanging at the end with the last little twist I’m not entirely sure I’m set on reading/finishing the next book.

Despite some of the dark content, I found the writing style easy to get through.

I enjoyed the moments that Lei founds strength in love and friendship.

In spite of only getting a little glimpse of Lei’s family in the herb shop at the beginning, their bond and the coziness of Lei’s home came across well.

I liked the cultures that the author set up. The world-building was fascinating. Not every character feels the same way about the situation as our main character does, so it makes them feel all the more realistic.

The romance was cute!

Sex work and same sex couples are stigmatized by some characters in the book.

I binge-read this book in a day because it was super entertaining and the worldbuilding captured me. I don’t usually praise settings in a book, but this one did such a great job describing each location enough to where I could envision it without thinking too hard on it. It is a book with heavy topics so keep the warnings in mind, but I enjoyed the main character’s vitality and fierceness against the system around her. The plot was also well paced, and I loved the little cliffhanger it left off on, leaving me wanting more. I can’t wait to see where she goes next in the next book.

OH! And the ✨🏳️‍🌈 sapphic representation?? Chef’s kiss. It was built up well and I’m so glad they didn’t just have them together and then one is 💀- I loved it and as a sapphic, I fell in love with their relationship and hope to see it continue into the series.

If fantasy, female empowerment with sapphic flavoring are your favs in a book, please read Girls of Paper and Fire!
