Read it for English lit. Not my cup of tea but certainly not a bad book. It offers a look into Bangladesh culture and what it is like to be an immigrant from that country and what struggles you encounter day to day. You feel for her, you really do.

I had read this when it first came out but didn't remember it will. I think I probably picked up on other aspects some twenty years later. I was interested in Nazeem's story- she's a complex character with strengths, weaknesses and a journey to travel. Razia had started in my mind more clearly and I would have liked more of her, and if Hasina as well. I was also interested in the nuances of how Chana is portrayed, sympathetically in some ways, despite him being hugely frustrating and at times unbearable. Definitely worth the reread
