The Legend of Sleepy Bear Dunes by Kathy-jo Wargin, illustrated by Gijsbert Van Frankenhuyzen and published in 1998. This book was written for the age range of seven to ten-year-olds. This story starts with a mother's love... Fleeing from a forest fire, a mother bear urges her two cubs into the watery shelter of a vast body of water. Though it will be difficult, she knows they will be safe if they can swim across to the opposite shore. With calls of encouragement and steadfast love, Mother Bear guides her cubs across the great lake, Lake Michigan. And the story of what happens once Mother Bear reaches the far shore becomes the legend behind the natural wonder known as Sleeping Bear Dune. This beautifully illustrated book brings to life the legend of how Sleepy Bear Dunes got its name. While also bringing young readers to read some fantastic traditional literature that will teach them about a landmark so close to them and the legend that goes with it, making the Dunes, when they go or hear about it, come even more to life! <traditional literature><legend><adventurous><emotional><informative><lighthearted><reflective>

I remember this from when I was a child, probably around the time it was published. The art is beautiful and the story is just as sad as I remembered.

This is a picture book for mid elementary school aged children. It falls into the categories of myths, legends, fairytales, and folktales and discusses a legend of sleeping bear that is located in Michigan. This would be a great story for talking about legends or discussing this area of Michigan. The artwork that accompanies the story is beautiful.

The story is of a mother and her cubs that swim across the lake to escape a fire. The cubs do not make it and the mother is waiting for her children to arrive.
