A "safe," bland version of [b:Wake of Vultures|24819482|Wake of Vultures (The Shadow, #1)|Lila Bowen|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1432332113s/24819482.jpg|44460269], a much more mature, nuanced, and interesting book despite its "YA" categorization. Harris knows how to appeal to the masses, so you'll be appealed, but, meh.

Wow. Charlaine Harris out does herself with "An Easy Death". I have long been a fan of her work, most recently her Midnight, Texas trilogy, so I thought I knew what to expect. From the very beginning I could tell this novel is a step above what I am used to from her. Gunnie Lizbeth Rose is the perfect heroine to root for, young and spunky with a quick trigger finger. But she's been through a lot and her experience shows. If she had a motto it'd be 'When life get"s tough, you need to be tougher'. This story takes us on a dystopian journey through what was once known as America, as Lizbeth escorts two powerful Russian wizards on their search for a way to save their empire. Poverty is the norm, and its a dog eat dog world. Can Lizbeth complete her mission? Or will she die trying? Highly Recommended!
The main character's personality appears to be simply shooting people. I realize this is not a personality trait. Hence the two stars.

It took about a quarter of the book to get into this alternate version of the United States of America. I picked up my pace reading as I got further into the book. I was very happy to have a map at the beginning, I always love a map. On the fence if I will read book 2. I did enjoy book one, just not sure I want to continue.
An interesting new Western-themed alternate history series featuring a woman gunslinger and her attempts to help two clients who happen to be wizards
Pretty good. The beginning chapter or so was awkward before it got into what I’d consider Harris’s trademark simple writing. Will continue the series but not hankering for more.
The first of what promises to be another great series by Charlaine Harris. Lizbeth Rose is 19 years old and makes her living as a Gunnie. That is she's a gun for hire, usually with her crew, running refugees to safety for a price.
America has collapsed into various small, independent countries with large parts of its territories being taken over by stronger nations like Mexico, Canada and Russia, plus the original states (except Georgia) are"bending the knee" to England. Gunnie Rose is living in Texoma which looks a lot like the Wild West. This is a very poor place with occasional clapped together cars and trucks, and even less access to electricity.
Lizbeth has standards and a great deal of pride. She gained them the hard way growing up as illegitimate after her mother was raped by a gregori (magician) after he spelled her into compliance. As a Gunnie, she is notorious for refugees her mother by gunning him down when he was stupid enough to return to the area. Not a lot of sentiment in Gunnie Rose!
The story opens with the loss of her crew, including her lover and best friend, in an ambush during a routine run. As the only survivor of the crew, she has to walk into the desert, rescue the cargo, and get them to safety. Once done she has to walk back home through the desert.
Once home, still grieving, two of the hated gregori arrive on her doorstep. They want to hire her to find a particular man, Oleg, and his brother, Sergei. They may also be interested in the girl who is the daughter of one of them, but no one knows which one. They are looking for Oleg's daughters. The first problem is they are gregori and she usually wouldn't have anything to do with them. The second problem is that she knows Oleg is deceased because she shot him. But the kicker is that she may have a little sister. So she has to accept the job. Besides, she has to make a living.
Gunnie Rose is an excellent anti hero. As with all Charlaine Harris' books, the combination of plot and character is irresistible. The alternative world she has created is beautifully done. As with Gunnie Rose, there is no sentiment here or romancing the Wild West. I am not a fan of guns or bloodshed but still loved this book.
I was engrossed in this book from beginning to end. I highly recommend it.
