Medusa, but sexy.

Anyway, this was surprisingly good. Yes, I DO judge books by its cover. But I always try to read them too.
I love the characters, especially Amira. She naive and shy but not weak or annoying. Too often  I see the more delicate "innocent" characters paired with demanding and rough ""alpha males".  Kyllen was just so sweet and  protective, a perfect fit in my opinion. Sometimes you just want to read about a man that just unapologetically adores his love interest.
The writing leaves a lot to be desired. There were some really akward phrases and the writing was very literal. But I prefer that to the purple prose often seen in (ya) fantasy these days.
I didn't think I would read the second book because these kind of books never really interested me enough to do so. But this time I think I will. I don't care for court politics, so I'm not particularly excited for that, but I am excited to read more about these two lovable characters.

I desperately need sleep. I went to bed at 6 AM! I thought, oh...I'll start this ARC and finish it tomorrow night. HAHAHAHAHA.

Here's the breakdown:
1. The covers for the whole River of Mists Universe are insanely HOT.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! Read it in like 2 hours if that. Straight onto #2! 3.5/5

The rough idea for the world building was cool. It was an interesting take on topics that have been done before. The dialog, relationships between all characters, and execution of the plot were very poorly handled. This was an extremely boring story. Nothing felt natural, there was no plausible conflict, no urgency , and there was definitely no chemistry between the main characters (I felt more between FMC and the werewolf in 2 pages) than the rest of the book entirely. Those weird pet names MMC kept calling FMC

What are these characters?

We have the flamboyant crown prince, King of the pet names who progresses a whopping 0% in character development despite his ordeal.

And the blind leading the blind, classic damsel in distress who will double as a doormat. A, “one stiff breeze” could knock her over type gal. The, “delicate and must be protected at all costs”- not bc of herself but bc of how weak she is physically and mentally you see- the naive, innocent and pure Female Lead who knows the horrors of the world but also, doesn’t.

A very new and unexpected read, and one I couldn't put down.

Could it have used a little more world building? Sure. Was Amira painfully naive? Absolutely. It's a miracle she wasn't taken advantage of FURTHER. Was Kyllen unlikely to immediately fall for the mess of a human being who had zero friends and no experience outside of circus life? Of course, but the guy had been locked inside of a box. Give him a break.

Look, this wasn't a perfect couple, but damn it if I didn't hope against all hopes that they would live happily ever after. Despite the many challenges in their way (the eyes thing, mainly. Girlfriend is gonna be blind for the rest of her life just to kiss a boy).

Amira and Kyllen are perfect to me, okay?

I've given Serpent's Touch a low three star rating. It was quite different from my usual paranormal romances and I liked that aspect. Side note: Madame reminded me a little of the witch in [b:The Last Unicorn|29127|The Last Unicorn (The Last Unicorn, #1)|Peter S. Beagle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1524764327l/29127._SY75_.jpg|902304], though that might just be me. Not much happened, though there were some suspenseful/stressful scenes, and I wish the relationship had either developed more or was still developing. There is a part two ([b:Serpent's Claim|60299994|Serpent's Claim (Serpent's Touch, #2)|Marina Simcoe|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1648068007l/60299994._SY75_.jpg|95064096]) that I may or may not check out.
