Completely mesmerising, brilliant and enormous. A journey of true illumination. I can't recommend this book more highly.

I wanted to like this book. I really, really did. I mean, it's Neil. But..... I just couldn't. Maybe it wasn't the same without the pretty pictures of Sandman. Actually, I thought the plot didn't really hang together all that well - it was too episodic, rambly and vague, and nothing happened for 80% of the book except Shadow wandering around. There is a lot of almost-name-dropping too - not quite telling you which god he was talking about each time, and I felt like he was mocking me ("heehee, I know who this is and you don't - nyaaaah"). A lot of his themes are ideas he touched on in Sandman, and I guess I liked the way he handled it there better.

Neil Gaiman does it again! The story is so cleverly crafted and leaves you begging for more after every single chapter. I love how different gods of so many different cultures were present, and the way they were incorporated into the story is just so masterfully done. Some lines left such lasting impressions on me, I wish the book was at least double its size.

'It doesn'tmatter that you didn't believe in us,' said Mister Ibis. 'We believed in you.'
