Well this was a weird and disturbing novella! I really enjoyed this plot and loved the grotesque themes and descriptions which really brought the story to life. I thought that the enameling used on the girls as a form of make-up was fascinating and I was horrified to learn that is was a real treatment which added even more horror to the novella.

I really liked the main character Josephine, even when she started to go a bit mad and I thought she was a very intriguing character with interesting development from the first chapter to the last. All of the women in this story are fascinating, toxic and fitted perfectly into this sapphic erotic horror that left me feeling uncomfortable and disturbed but also loving every moment!

I also loved how there was a book within the book; the story that Josephine wrote about Blanche and Miss Corallie which was also an intense and erotic love story between a woman who loved to play games and a woman who would do anything for her.

Overall this is a brilliant story of obsession, darkness and women's wrongs that I didn't want to put down.

Enamoured: A Tryptich by Shelley Lavigne is a story in three parts. The book is about Josephine, a widow in the early 1900s who is trying to build a cosmetics business while under suspicion of murder. A wealthy young socialite comes in for a treatment one day and awakens something in Josephine, bringing up memories of her first love. Things escalate, and Josephine finds herself with a choice: love or money.

This one is a wild ride, guys. Definitely check the content warnings (there's a lot going on here, and I had to set the book down a couple of times when things got particularly gross), but it was a lot of fun! The central relationship of the book is fraught and full of toxic obsession, and I found that the story had a lot to say about the standards girls are held to, the way the beauty industry capitalizes on our insecurities, and the way that capitalism can make someone do terrible things to get ahead. It's also an erotic novella, so if that's not your jam, this one may not be for you. However, if you're interested in a gruesome story of sapphic obsession with anti-capitalist leanings and strong themes of cosmetics as both armor and a prison (and you don't mind a fair bit of spice) give Enamoured: A Tryptich a try!

Also, shout out to @kazoosnow on Instagram, who created the lovely illustrations. They look so perfectly reminiscent of early 1900s consmetics ads, and I found their inclusion in the book to be quite fun.

Trope(s)/Element(s):
-Women behaving badly
-Dangerous historical makeup practices
-Queer obsession
-Victorian erotica
-Power dynamics both in relationships and within systems of oppression

This triple feature follows Josephine Walker, a widow suspected of murder in the early 1900s, who dives into the world of cosmeticsโ€”specifically the dangerous kind.

This debaucherous gothic novella was wildly entertaining. The body horror? Deliciously disturbing. I had never heard of skin enameling before and had to look it up immediately. I loved how the story danced between the erotic, the grotesque, and the downright horrifying.

If you're into body horror with an erotic twist, this oneโ€™s a must-read.

Thanks @hedonebooks & @shelley_lavigne for this arc which releases on July 10th.
