Strange Houses is the kind of book that pulls you in and refuses to let go.
It’s a fast-paced mystery thriller packed with dark secrets, an eerie vibe that gave me chills, and a really unique format—between the odd house plans and the interview-style storytelling, it makes for an interactive reading experience that kept me completely hooked!!
The blueprints sprinkled throughout the book ? A total lifesaver.
They made it so much easier to follow along with what the characters were saying about the houses. Honestly, without them, things would’ve been a lot harder to piece together!
I had a million questions while reading, and when the truth behind those bizarre house blueprints finally came out—mind blown!!
I never saw it coming. It was wild and honestly kind of unsettling to think about in a real-world context.
Overall, this was such a fun, gripping read—one of those books you can easily devour in a single sitting. And that ambiguous ending ? It just left me with even more questions, making me wonder if there’s another layer to the story we still haven’t uncovered.
This book has been huge in Indonesia, and I’ve had it on my wishlist forever.

Strange Houses is like an adult picture book with thrills and kills that kept me invested throughout the entirety of the story.
When a writer learns of an oddly built house from his friends and decides to dive deeper into its bizarre layout he stumbled upon a mystery spanning generations involving hidden rooms, family secrets, and dismembered bodies.
The last act of the book was the only tough part for me with a massive info dump from one of the characters at the end. I wish the book had been longer to make space for slowly letting the characters discover the information rather than having it all kind of laid out for them at the end. I understood the character's motivation for info dumping but I wish a good chunk of that had been discovered in different ways and then you come to them for the big reveal.
Overall, I loved Strange Houses, it was a quick read with lots of twists and turns and the inclusion of floorplans throughout the story and all the visuals added to the fun of trying to figure out the mystery. I have yet to read Strange Pictures, Uketsu's other book, but I'll definitely be picking it up next.

This was an incredibly fast read. A horror novel that starts with examining the blueprints of a house and extrapolating on all the odd things that may at first go unnoticed. It quickly becomes dark. This book was quite a fun read and kept me guessing throughout.

Sejak pertama kali diumumkan bahwa sebuah buku misteri dari penulis Jepang dengan denah rumah yang sangat tidak biasa akan diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Indonesia, rasa penasaran saya langsung melonjak. Terlebih lagi, video cuplikan adegan dari buku ini yang diunggah oleh penulisnya, Uketsu, di YouTube, berhasil memicu gelombang rasa ingin tahu yang tak tertahan. Ada sesuatu yang memikat dalam setiap detiknya—entah itu misteri rumahnya, atau teka-teki yang tampak tak berujung.
Pikiran saya pun mulai bermain-main dengan berbagai skenario liar. Apakah rumah aneh ini memiliki sejarah kelam sebagai lokasi pembunuhan? Atau mungkin, ini adalah tempat persembunyian seorang psikopat yang menawan korbannya dalam kegelapan? Pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang muncul di benak saya semakin membuat rasa penasaran membuncah. Akhirnya, setelah berbagai pertanyaan yang terus menggelitik pikiran, saya mendapatkan kesempatan untuk menyelami buku ini dalam versi bahasa Indonesia, yang diterjemahkan oleh Eri Pramestiningtyas dengan judul Teka-teki Rumah Aneh.
Saat mulai membaca, saya langsung tenggelam dalam alur cerita yang diciptakan Uketsu. Cara penulisannya membuat cerita ini bergerak cepat, seolah tanpa jeda, sehingga pembaca hampir tak sempat bernapas. Gaya penceritaan Uketsu ini begitu mengalir dan penuh energi, menanamkan rasa penasaran yang semakin membara dengan setiap halaman yang saya balik. Alurnya yang dinamis dan penuh kejutan membuat saya terus-menerus ingin tahu apa yang akan terjadi selanjutnya, membuat saya enggan berhenti membaca sampai benar-benar menuntaskan halaman terakhir.
Salah satu hal yang membuat buku ini begitu menarik adalah dominasi dialog di dalamnya—sesuatu yang jarang saya temukan di novel lain. Awalnya, saya khawatir hal ini akan membuat ceritanya terasa datar atau monoton, tapi ternyata justru sebaliknya. Dialog-dialog tersebut memberikan ritme yang cepat dan meningkatkan ketegangan di setiap percakapan. Setiap interaksi di antara karakter seolah menyimpan rahasia, memancing saya untuk menebak-nebak, hanya untuk dikejutkan oleh perkembangan yang tak terduga. Dengan cara ini, Uketsu berhasil membangun atmosfer misterius yang semakin mendalam seiring dengan berjalannya cerita.
Cerita yang diangkat juga sangat unik, dengan kejutan-kejutan yang akhirnya dihadirkan oleh penulis benar-benar di luar ekspektasi saya. Bahkan ketika saya berpikir sudah mulai memahami ke mana arah cerita ini, Uketsu menghadirkan kejutan yang membuat saya terperangah. Hingga di akhir cerita, saya masih menyisakan banyak pertanyaan yang belum terjawab, bahkan merasa merinding saat memikirkannya kembali.
Tentu, jika boleh jujur, ada beberapa hal yang membuat saya merasa sedikit tidak nyaman. Karakter-karakter dalam cerita ini digambarkan dengan rasa ingin tahu yang terkadang terasa begitu berlebihan—sampai pada titik menjengkelkan, atau bahkan tidak realistis. Tapi, bukankah itu yang membuat cerita ini terus bergerak? Tanpa rasa penasaran yang menggebu-gebu dari para karakter, misteri di balik rumah aneh ini mungkin tidak akan pernah terungkap. Selain itu, ada beberapa kebetulan dalam cerita yang terasa terlalu fantastis dan sulit dipercaya.
Secara keseluruhan, saya sangat menikmati pengalaman membaca Teka-teki Rumah Aneh karya Uketsu. Ini adalah buku yang tepat untuk dibaca dalam sekali duduk, dengan alur cerita yang mengalir cepat dan penuh ketegangan. Jika Anda mencari kisah yang mampu menguji pikiran dan membuat Anda terus bertanya-tanya, buku ini adalah pilihan yang tepat. Uketsu telah berhasil menciptakan dunia penuh teka-teki, di mana setiap jawaban hanya membuka lebih banyak pertanyaan. Apakah Anda berani memasukinya?

Penulisan untuk terjemahan buku ini juga mudah dipahami. Jadi gak ngerasa kesulitan dan makin gak bisa berhenti untuk baca sampai akhir. Pace cerita yang disajikan juga cepat, aku rasa emang dilarang buat berhenti baca di tengah jalan. Ya, emang. Gak boleh baca di tengah jalan karena nanti ketabrak. Jokes jelek, maaf.
Aku juga suka bagaimana denah selalu digambarkan sehingga memudahkan aku sebagai pembaca untuk membayangkannya. Tanpa perlu menggambar sendiri. Lalu, kejutan yang diberikan rasanya berlapis-lapis dan membuatku speechless. Sempat parno juga pas baca bagian bayangan anak kecil, mana waktu itu lagi sendirian. Argh.
