Let’s be honest… I checked this out from the library just to get the book list within.

Loved this book! I would like to buy a copy in the future when I have children of my own.

I especially enjoyed the way that she views books as friends. In this context, she points out that some books may not mean as much to us as they do, say, a friend that recommended it. There's nothing wrong with this, some books just connect- just as some people seem to have an instant connection that lasts throughout their lives.

Another thing that I loved was the conversation about ethical shopping. Of course we'd like to do all that we can, but we can't run faster than we have strength. It may not always be within out budget or ability to shop in a completely ethical way. When those times occur, we should cut ourselves a break and remember that by doing the doing that best that we can, we are still accomplishing good.

The last half of book is filled with book recommendations categorized by geographic region. I thought the organization was logical and the book explanations were well thought out. She even makes note is religious elements are at all mentioned in the stories.

My only recommendation with this book:
Maybe don't listen to an audiobook version. At least, not if you want to really soak in those last few chapters. That's what I did and, I'll tell ya, after a while, all the books started melding together in my brain.

Just the first 48 pages read like a book then the rest is booklists. She had some good ideas on how to bring the world into our home. I haven't read through all the booklists yet. I've read most of the picture books from the first one though and I'd say the average rating of those is 4 stars. Some excellent reads, some average ones, but none that I def don't like. I'm excited to keep working our way through these and try to open my kids up to a whole new world.

I struggled with what to rate the book. On one hand, the idea is brilliant, and the author writes very well: succinctly and inspirationally. On the other hand, the vast (i.e. almost ALL) the books weren't in my local library. If it's not a booklist I can take to my library, I'm not sure how useful it actually is. I did discover some real gems I might purchase down the line...but I think anyone could comb their shelves for applicable books to the region and make the judgment call themselves.

Not as much 'reading' as it is a resource of quality literature by age for kids, along with a description of books. Definitely a great reference to have handy when studying different countries around the world.

A great resource for adding diverse culture and prospective to your child's reading. I love how it's organized by region, and I especially appreciated the index by country in the back. I didn't enjoy the memoir portion as much as I enjoyed Honey for a Child's Heart, but as a booklist this is a wonderful tool for any parent to utilize.

I love the concept of this book, raising globally minded kids one book at a time. The organization both by age level and geographic area is spot on. The indices are convenient and helpful. I would not suggest you read through this like your usual book, even non-fiction. It's much better to be used as a reference guide as your children grow, or for any teacher looking to find age appropriate books for cultural or geographic studies. Read the first few chapters then flip through the lists of books. Excellent and needed reference for any household that has children.
