Fairly decent mid-arc installments. Nothing that stood out as awesome, nothing that horribly annoyed me.

Many of the third issues of the new X-series check in on characters we haven't dealt with in a while:

Marauders gives us Egg and Shinobi Shaw, Excalibur's use of Rictor in the story has me intrigued to see where the story is going (though I could always do without Pete Wisdom), and New Mutants gives us Armor, Glob, Boom-Boom, Sage, Beak and Angel (not Archangel, the Angel from Grant Morrison's New X-Men run) and their kids.

Apart from rolling my eyes at Pete Wisdom's return, I thought al of these check-ins were thoughtful and a good way to expand characters without making everything too confusing. New Mutants, in particular, does a great job at giving us a context for these characters instead of just assuming everyone knows the entire X-continuity. But [a:Ed Brisson|5283355|Ed Brisson|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1540873406p2/5283355.jpg] also does it in a way that isn't tiresome for those of us who Have read most to all of X-continuity. I'm greatly looking forward to seeing what else he does on the title.

The only really weak spot in this volume is the consistently underwhelming Fallen Angels. I think the art is consistently too dark, the open panel layout makes every image seem swallowed, and [a:Bryan Hill|19920633|Bryan Hill|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] doesn't make any of his characters, hero or villain, in any well compelling. The story is hot tap water on a hot day.

Getting to this volume was totally worth reading through the less impressive volume two. I continue to believe this is the best way to read the 2019/2020 X-books.

After two exciting volumes, Vol. 3 was disappointing. It felt like so much filler material, none of the various plotlines seemed to move more than inches. Also, I'm noticing more and more disparity in the artwork. A lot of the art in this volume seemed rushed, dark, muddy and unappealing. Hopefully, the next volume will get things back on track.

Hard to review the books in this format
X-men is a 4
Marauders a 3.5
Excalibur a 3
New Mutants a 3.5
X-force 3
Fallen angels a 1.5?
Something like that.

Things really start picking up in for Excalibur and X-Force here. Marauders and New Mutants take a change of pace but do not drop in quality. While X-Men introduces a comedic new group of villains. Alas Fallen Angels continue to plague these collected editions by finishing on an uninspired note each time.

X-Force and Excalibur were the highlights in this one for me. The rest was okay, but those two were my favorites.

That said - this 3rd volume drops a star for me. I just feel like 4 stars are too high this go around. Maybe volume 4 will get it back up there?
