Absolutely loved this. Could not put it down. So good, so immersive, and so unique.
I became a fan of "The Expanse" tv series and was disappointed that it was cancelled, so I turned to the book series. I enjoyed this as an audio book and felt like there was pretty good parity between book and tv show, though I enjoyed more details and inner monologues of the characters from the book. Highly recommend the audio book.
Wow. This book really blew me away. It was an absolutely captivating, fun, and cosmic ride.
BUT before I get into what I loved, I have to make a caveat that I had mixed feelings about Miller's excessive fixation and fantasizing about a women he didn't know. While it served as a useful motive for him to do the things he did, this is also something I and many other women have had to deal with a LOT. Men dehumanizing me by making me into their savior/manic pixie dream girl/validation/ideal/therapist has affected me significantly over the course of my life and still does today (and it's even worse for BIWOC). While I'm not saying this dynamic shouldn't be written about (it does happen IRL after all) I wish it weren't so glorified in the process, since it contributed so heavily to the end to the last ditch save-the-world ending.
ANYHOW. Other than the caveat, I absolutely LOVED this book. It blew my mind, surprised me constantly, kept me engaged (but not TOO stressed), drew me in with fantastic character building, and took twists I NEVER saw coming. I absolutely love to have my mind blown. This is why I read and love this genre. The ending was cosmic, and curiosity will probably lead me to read the next one. And apart from the caveat, I did appreciate the relative diversity and powerful female characters. (Would have liked if one had been the POV as much as one of the two white male POV characters, but hey I'll take what I can get. At least he's trying, which is a lot more than I can say about some white dude writers.)
Overall, this was excellently written, thrilling, thought provoking, captivating and utterly enjoyable. 4.5 stars.
