There's nothing like curling up with a Famous Five book. They're such gems, and this book is what started me on the journey, and also taught me the word ingot (for some reason that nugget of information has always stuck with me). I grew up reading these books, going on journeys with Julian, Dick, Anne, George and of course Timothy the dog, and I always felt like I was running along with them through their adventures. I still love following them now though, all these years later, it's now exciting watching these characters go on these adventures even if I no longer feel like I'm there with them.

If I ever have children they'll definitely be reading these books. Whilst at times they're not the most politically correct of books (they were written in the 1940's though so what do you expect) they're great to read because the subject matter is lighthearted and fun, and the characters feel like they're your friends.

I am so annoyed at myself for not keeping all my copies, and I'll have to buy them all again at some point because now there's only three sitting alone on my shelf. I'll turn back to these books for many years to come, they're simply brilliant.

Bueno , ni se de que va pero recuerdo que lo pase genial con esta colección de detectives, tendría 9 años y, los devoraba cada fin de semana, también es verdad que no existía móviles ni consolas. Se merece las 5..

Four cousins (plus one dog) have an adventure exploring an island with castle ruins and the promise of buried treasure.
Meh. Too syrupy sweet for my tastes. I see why kiddos like these books, but they aren't the kind of children's book that appeals to all ages, I think.

My childhood would have lacked a lot of mystery and joy if I hadn't read all of Enid Blython's books available in Hebrew. I am not sure which is Famous five and which is Five Detctives and a Dog-I first read one series, and then I felt it was too childish so I moved on to the books with the dog.
I remember only a little: how the fat boy used to put on costumes and at least once filled his mouth with cotton (Did Brando imitate him in the Godfather, or was it a mere coincidence?), the long tunnels under a castle, a swamp that got into my dreams.
I'm sure my parents silently thanked Enid Blython for every hours I spent reading and not running on the street.

I really enjoy this when I was in elementary school and I bought another copy to read at home. I need to re-read this again.

I first read the Famous Five series as a child and wanted to read them again with an adults perspective. I still love this book, though I forgot how posh they seem! I think all children need to read Enid Blyton.
