Masterful!
I was hooked from start to finish.

I've never read a crime novel like this: a courthouse drama told through multiple perspectives. I loved that the characters were all possible suspects — and none of them were wholly likeable (especially Elizabeth).

I was surprised by the frank but believable mediations on being a parent to a disabled child. I felt like it would hard to read but validating for parents in similar positions who have had dark thoughts in hard times. And it shone a light on how important community — real, solid friendships — is for everyone. Sadly most of the characters do not have a sense of real community and support in their lives, from the Korean migrant main characters to the mothers with disabled children.

Staging the story mostly over the court case duration, with flashbacks and memories along the way, made for a fast pace. There was a strong sense of tension through the story, which kept me on my toes. The type of book I was annoyed to put down.

I loved the way that this story captures the many ways that we misinterpret, misunderstand and get the wrong impression of other people, even our closest family and friends.

My heart broke for Mary and her family at this stupid mistake. I didn't suspect Mary until the revelation of the phone call to the insurance company, and still am not quite convinced it was her (even though it was) but maybe that's because I don't want it to be.

all of the topics in this book are handled really well. at the end of the day, the mystery aspect is what fell flat for me because
i just don’t believe that Mary would commit arson. I don’t think we were given enough time from her perspective to understand; despite everything she went through we didn’t get to hear how hurt she was in her own words
