Tykkäsin, vaikkakin olisin toivonut vähän nopeampaa tahtia. Innolla odotan seuraavaa kirjaa!

Nordic noir. Set in Finland. I like the main character and slowly started to like one of her colleagues. But there was a LOT of misogyny. Is that Finland in the 1990s?

I really enjoyed this probably for the reasons some people didn't. It's different. The tone is casual, things don't work perfectly (without it being a story arc of anti-hero corruption), and the 'hero' is ambivalent about her job. That's a refreshing change from the detective lifer. It's not a brilliant mystery, but it's entertaining candy.

Helsinki. Murder. Female detective.

Story: A group of choral singers gather at a villa during summer in Vuosaari. When one member of the group discovers another floating dead in the water, a police investigation opens up and everyone's a suspect.

Language: Just over 100 pages, this book's vocabulary is around a B+ level and contains puhekieli and slang.

Characters: The prologue is told from one point of view and the rest is told in first person from detective Maria Kallio's perspective. The only woman in her department she tolerates a lot of hassle from the men and tries to prove her worth not as a woman, but as a police detective.

A bit 80's in the dialogue and view of women, but overall I quite liked it and bet I'd enjoy her recent works even more.

Murder. Helsinki. First in series.

Story: A group of choral singers gather at a villa in Helsinki. When one member of the group is found dead, floating in the water, a police investigation opens and everyone is a suspect.

Characters: While the prologue is told from the point of view of one of the choral singers, the rest of the book is told in first person by detective Maria Kallio. Female, single and the only woman on the Pasila police force.

Language: Set in Finland during the late 80's, early 90's. Old school views on women and their roles in society are evident. The name of the main character is changed in the translation for some unknown reason, as all the other names are the same.

Overall I enjoyed it. A solid 4 stars, and I bet I'd like her more recent work even more.
