This book was recommended to me by a random lady in an independent bookstore. I did not read any reviews or know anything about it before I started it.

I love that it is a pseudo true family history told by a grand daughter. The subject matter should definitely have a trigger warning and I can’t say that I actually like Stella or any of her immediate family. That being said the story as a whole is pretty incredible.

DNF at 7%. This story is not for me. I should probably pull off any ‘literary fiction’ books left on my TBR tbh.

Yay day two at the beach, book two finished. This book was very good, I give it four stars because I thought there was a lot of pieces that didn’t need to be in the book and the ending got kinda weird, but overall it was a good story and I still read it in a day and really liked it

I'm not in the mood for writing a review that's anywhere near decent so will merely jot down a few words.
Fabulous title. Excellent historical setting (in Calabria, and emigrating to the US). Dreadful indictment of men's power over women. Bittersweet ending. Terrific portrait of Stella and her family.

Purity culture crap. Your sister can’t be your sister if she doesn’t have the same mom. And absolutely scandalized by “her unmarried adolescent sister-in-law suckling an unexplained infant” when it’s none of her business anyway

A sprawling story that leaves out much that I would have thought important to its narrative. We end up knowing frustratingly little about the inner lives and feelings of the main characters, since everything is incompletely channelled through the perception of Stella. Even what we are told about her doesn't seem to match 'reality', and she remains very much an enigma.

Pleasant to read and fairly engaging but I'm left wondering what point the author was trying to make

Brilliant and messy and funny and bighearted. There are parts that fly by and parts that are quite hard to read. Warning: Lots of sexual violence.
