Solid 4 ⭐️. Tragic and darkly humorous— made me laugh at loud throughout. Others complained it was too long but I disagree- I finished it in less than a week and did not think it dragged. Awesome characters.
This book was good but so sad. Honestly I wouldn’t read if you’re triggered by depression or rape. The Italian culture is so vibrant and the big family culture really reels you in (as someone from a huge family).
Wow. Even today, in 2023, I related to Stella in so many ways. This book was everything - I will be thinking of it for a long time. For sure 5/5 for me.
Ok so, while I loved the way this book was written, and as compelling as I found the story -I did finish it in a day- it was still kind of too dark for me at times. And I assume the author wanted to convey the realities of women of this time but still some traumatic scenes felt too graphic and not necessary.
The first half about Stella’s childhood in Italy was wonderfully interesting, the second half about her life in America was honestly, while still interesting, kind of difficult to read sometimes ? It’s not the most graphic or sad book I’ve ever read by far, but as this is a work of fiction I kept expecting Stella to get some sort of agency or control over her life ? But it stayed painfully realistic.
I would still recommend this book as it was enjoyable and compelling though and it’s beautifully written.

I rarely have the desire to be in a book club but I certainly would love the opportunity to talk about this book!
I loved this book! It was fun, moving, uncomfortable, interesting, sad, and wonderful all at once.
Full disclose: I only picked up this book because of the title. BUT it was worth it. Loved this Italian family saga.
There's so much to say about this book. It's absolutely going to be a tough one to beat for top read of 2019. Stella is such a strong, yet devastatingly sad character and I loved her journey. This is a must-read for all my female friends. As an Italian-American whose family immigrated around the same time as these characters, this story hits painfully close to home. Don't sleep on this one, folks.
This book just wasn't for me unfortunately. I kept trying to come back to it but made it to page 70 or so before giving up.
