ENFIN !

I have to admit, after Ash and Cael, and Calvin and Ethan's story, I was worried about this one. Cochet seems to have such a love affair for Dex that she can't let him take a backseat, even in someone else's story.

However, she seems to have taken readers' criticism to heart, because, for once, this story was all about the couple, in this case, Sebastian and Hudson. I did have some frustration with Hudson, I just couldn't see why he kept hurting himself and Sebastian like he did. But all in all, I liked the story a lot, if I did figure out the Big Plot Twist fairly early on. I also think TIN might have done a lot more to manipulate the situation than was even let on here.

The pieces and players have definitely been set in motion…

New challenges and enemies have surfaced, complicating the tenuous relationship between humans and Therians. This of course, results in some interesting and dangerous developments, which happen to bring Seb and Hudson together, despite them trying their best to move on. Seb and Hudson have been torturing themselves for years, as their guilt from a tragic accident has kept them apart, making them both quite miserable. What they should’ve realized ages ago is that a mate bond is not to be trifled with. I’m surprised they held out this long. *shakes head*

What I enjoyed the most was Seb (2nd best gentle giant of this series behind Ethan). I’ve not been shy regarding my huge affinity for this particular character type and for me, he just did my heart in over and over. Despite Hudson’s absolute frustrating reluctance to just be happy, I also liked how the whole “mates” dynamic was set up.

Once again, Cochet further propels the story in preparation for her new series, which is really these characters branching off into new adventures, dangers, and most assuredly crazy hijinks and shenanigans. I can hardly wait!

This review may express unpopular views. I write my reviews for myself, so I can remember what I read – and it doesn’t make any sense to lie to myself.

The Thirds series started off strong for me, but the last 3 books took a bit of a downturn. I was going to give Darkest Hour Before Dawn 2 stars – but it would have been out of some weird sense of series loyalty. DHBD was…. Meh. It was a chore to get through. I was happy when it ended. In short…. I did not enjoy it.

This installment focused on the Seb Hobbes and Dr. Hudson Colbourn pairing and I went into the story with a sense of trepidation as neither caught my interest as secondary characters in previous installments. And as anticipated their characters and romance were lukewarm. I just did not connect with the characters at all. Their romance seemed more stereotypical M/F as opposed to M/M in terms of their characterization with Hudson being the more effeminate character and Hobbes being the gentle giant perfect gentleman. This may not be fair but a personal pet peeve of mine is anyone calling their significant other “Darling” with a straight face. The fact that Hudson is British unfortunately doesn’t cut him any slack. It also didn’t help that I didn’t particularly like Hudson…. I thought….there’s no way around it….I thought he was an idiot; and I have a low tolerance for idiots.

Which brings us to the main relationship conflict. I get that trauma is stressful for couples and can push people apart. But the whole premise behind the Seb and Hudson separation is…. ridiculous (and perpetuated by Hudson which increased my frustration with him). On some level it felt contrived, but if you take it at face value – then I must conclude that Hudson is an idiot. A lot of DHBD felt contrived. Seb and Hudson reconnecting and then Bam! – in the middle of the grocery store – the psychotic Mrs. Palmer. Sorry for your loss and all, but seriously? Blaming Hudson and Seb makes absolutely no sense based on the facts presented. None. And then the series of events pulling Seb and Hudson into TIN. What was Seb thinking? Who would do that knowing the consequences; or if you are going to do that – then you don’t leave any evidence (aka body). So now it’s either contrived or Seb is acting like an idiot too.

The sad reality is that I read DHBD is a state of either perpetual annoyance or boredom. The only highlight was the cool Wolf reveal.

Soft 4 Star. This one was a little bit predictable and maybe even repetitive or was it because I never had a huge attachment to either character? To Seb’s team 🤔 either way it was nice but not what I’d hoped for. Not nearly as much cloak and dagger as the perious book was making it out to be. Plus I think a big disappointment was the lack of Seb’s team, yeah we got a hint but then other then Dom they all seemed to disappear which kinda sucks but not the point I guess

Yes it was everything I wanted for Seb and Hudson.
This book made me feel a lot of feels and I was so happy with how it ended up that I just binged the business out of this book (sleep is for the weak).

April 2021 Re-read: Ughhh Seb and Hudson thank you for being just as precious and enjoyable the second time around.

re-read: I didn't like this as much as the first few times I read it. The angst between Seb and Hudson was a little much. I still liked the progression of the overall story and I was happy with the ending. Although overall it seems hfn with all the other things going on in there sphere of friends, I do believe Seb and Hudson are solid in their love for each other.

4.5 stars. I loved seeing Seb and Hudson finally come together. We also get great glimpses of Dex and Sloane.
