I wanted to like this book so much, but I just couldn’t. I wasn’t connected to any of the characters, the plot didn’t hold my attention, and I found myself rolling my eyes so many times. It was labeled as a rom-com and there was no rom and no com. The writing style also started to annoy me. There were just way too many internal rants and paragraphs between dialogue, I couldn’t take it any more. The synopsis sounded exactly like something I would love, but alas, this wasn’t for me.

Whatever you think this book is about, you’re wrong. This was a revelation, and had I not been obssessed with collecting badges on GR, I would not have discovered this gem. So thank you, GR for the recommendation!

Mira is an upper middle class Desi girl from Chicago. She’s engaged to her childhood classmate, who also happens to be an Orthopaedic surgeon. Everyone thinks Mira has hit the jackpot. And she has. She truly has. She convinces herself this every day. Then she goes to New York, and an encounter ignites something in her.

I love how this book vividly portrays the nuances of being raised in a strict Asian household. The cover and the blurb deceived me into thinking I was going to read a cosy romance, but boy, was I wrong. There’s a lot of underlying themes in this book, and Devi writes it in a way that is raw and compelling. I also loved the glimpse into Indian wedding culture.

It does lean on incredulity at times- like an Indian woman finding an Indian ring in Central Park, and Miira being able to pay back a hundred thousand dollars after working a normal job for 12 years. But other than those minor quirks, I truly adored this book. It was gut wrenching, adventurous, and unforgettable.
