Things I Liked:
- Holy SHIT where do I begin. I did NOT anticipate loving this book as much as I did. What do you MEAN a contemporary romance gets 5 stars? Uh when you make me absolutely sob of COURSE it does!!
- I cried so hard over this book. Spoilers:Meeting Vasu finally finally finally just. Utterly rendered me a sobbing baby. The love she has!! The love she inspires!! The people who love her and the people she loves!! It’s just all about love isn’t it!! MAN.
- There is no LGBTQ+ tag on this book on StoryGraph so imagine my delightful surprise at not one but TWO central gay couples in this book. Like WOW. HELLO? Hello. And they both have my whole heart.
- Mira has my whole heart too. Beyond just being truly the Ally of the Ages. I adored her from page 1 and just adored her and her character growth right up to the end. What a FANTASTIC main character. There really is something about her.
- I actually really appreciated the way Sonali Dev handled such heavy topics in a book that otherwise managed to have a more lighthearted romcom feel. Like. Yes this book should come with trigger warnings. Is it graphically described? Mercifully no. Are they tastefully and respectfully addressed head-on? Absolutely.
- This is my first Sonali Dev book I’ve ever read and I picked it up because I got it for free and like. Holy shit. I’m gonna go read her other stuff now thanks.
- Saket has a beautiful line about there being “magic everywhere” towards the beginning of the book and that just. Rang so true throughout the whole thing, from NYC to Darjeeling, India. I kept thinking that as I kept reading. Magic everywhere… so true. The places Mira traveled are so, so beautiful. I feel like I found a little bit of myself following her along, too.
Things I Didn’t Like:
- There are occasional awkward lines here and there… nothing that really detracts from the incredible experience of reading this book super badly but just. Are there. 😂 Spoilers:Like yup okay. It really did just say “hunger spiked in [her] womb” when she finally kissed her endgame LI for the first time. Alright. But y’know.
Truly, truly, my most unanticipated 5 star read yet. I adore this book with my whole being. Thank you, Sonali Dev. From the bottom of my own very gay heart. It was an incredible journey.
