Loved this latest work of (he)art by Sonali Dev. Beautifully intertwined love stories between past and present, but more importantly, a story about learning how to be true to oneself.

This was an interesting contemporary lit fic. I really liked the characters and the overarching story of finding the rings and tracing the family histories and how important the Indian culture is to the story. Some of the themes in this book are surprisingly dark and HEAVY for what looks to be marketed as a romcom. Rape, teen abortion, lgbtq and the struggles of cultural acceptance.

I was kind of shocked at 90% through the book where Mira and Kish just seem like really good friends and I didn’t really expect there to be a love triangle here and then there suddenly is. I do understand the slow building of trust these two characters acquire in their relationship. And I guess that I get it. I just really didn’t think this was necessary. I think the Kish character could’ve been anyone and it wouldn’t have changed the story of Mira‘s journey to find herself. I felt bad for Druv. If there had been any kind of chemistry between these two before then I would have understood that ending more. By the time this romance attempted to bloom the book was almost over and I had resigned myself to reading literary fiction. And honestly I think I would have liked it more if for once in a book two people could just have a platonic relationship and still be important to each other.
