Anything by this author is an immediate win for me. Purple Hibiscus is intimate, beautiful and horrifying in a number of ways. I fell in love with the abused, anxious Kambili and vied for her to grow and become free of the torture she experiences - and just as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie can easily write characters you adore, she can write complex characters you can't help but despise. Unlike Half of a Yellow Sun I didn't see the plot twist coming at all, and it gave me a visceral physical reaction to read. But despite the terrible occurrences of this book, it is incredibly hopeful and relieving.

Alongside the wonderful structure of this book - I rarely feel that books with non-linear narratives are so much better for them, but this book was so perfectly suited to it - one of the best things (for there were many) about this book was the beautiful writing. It is difficult to describe other than that it left me with almost a feeling of reverence, which I think captured the natural joy and beauty of the atmosphere as well as the fragility really well. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of Adichie's works to read soon.

rating this is weird because i probably would’ve liked it a lot more if i hadn’t had to read it for school. as such, and because of me being in a reading slump i found it very slow and hard to read. i found myself reading pages and then not remembering anything that had happened. i also didn’t like the relationship between
ayaka and amadi
; that was just very uncomfy. i did like the overall themes of the book, i thought it was really well done, but i didn’t enjoy it very much for various reasons.
