Another great contemporary addition to the P&P universe. I'm finding that I quite enjoy these stories where we deep-dive into a minor character.

For whatever reason, though, I wasn't quite as compelled by this novel as I was by The Other Bennet Sister, which is the last one of these takes I read. This one is a bit lighter on plot, maybe, and it feels a bit too long. Part 4, in my opinion, was completely unnecessary and can be omitted from your reading.
Moreover, what the f is the author trying to say about substance dependency and abuse in Part 4?? Because it kind of seems like they're glamourizing it by having Ann return to using laudanum, which is not cool.

Based on the characters of Austen's Pride and Prejudice, this story focuses on Anne de Borough, the daughter of Lady Catherine de Borough, and original intended of Mr. Darcy. While Pride and Prejudice simply mentions Anne as being unwell, this retelling suggests that her illness was due to laudanum, given to her as "medication" since soon after her birth. This interesting premise is also colored with a Sapphic slant, as Anne begins to find out who she is without her "medicine."

A beautifully written book. Greeley often describes Anne as "like a poet," but it's Greeley's words and phrasing that lends a near poetic quality to the pages. Beautifully descriptive and engaging, though the pacing of this book was rather slow, you never felt the urge to put it down out of boredom. Anne is a complex character, and the way she sees and describes the world is captivating. Her romance was similarly beautifully written, balancing realistic expectations for the era with character desires. I was worried that the ending would be tinged with sadness, as many Sapphic books (especially historical retellings) do, but I was pleasantly surprised with how perfectly the book wrapped up. One of my favorite books that I've read all year.
