I haven't yet read any of the other books by this author, but understand that he wrote it after he knew he was dying of cancer. It makes perfect sense as an end of life book about people in their 70s who are lonely and want to form a human connection with someone else.
I loved the format of the book, with short chapters featuring very short vignettes, slices of life for the two main characters. But life moves on whether they are recording it or not, whether they are happy or sad, together or alone.
I was a little disappointed with the families of the two main characters and how no-one cared about their happiness, and would stoop very low to protect their own narrow interests. I'm not old, so I don't know if this was a realistic portrayal, but I sure hope my brothers and I are more kind to our parents. This also made me grateful that my parents still have each other, after over 50 years of marriage, and (I think, but who really knows), a happier marriage than either of these two main characters had in their lives.
The audiobook is very well done.
