Wow this one was just heartbreaking at times. All the missed opportunities to fix things, easily avoided misunderstandings, so much guilt to go around. But oh so good

So meh. Fine, but isn't this genre done yet? If I'd had any idea this would become its own sub-genre 15 years ago when I was researching Les resistantes for my thesis, I would have pivoted and started writing these stories myself!

Technically I didn't actually finish. Every character in this book bugged me, and the plot device of interrupting the person about to say the Really Important Thing over and over which leads to a misunderstanding - enough of that, I say.

Though this started out a bit slow for me, once it took off, I didn't want to put it down! And I loved all the history associated with the story. Excellent book - highly recommend!!

Read this in one (long) sitting— truly could not put it down. I loved reading about the champagne region of France and how so many of the winemakers were involved in the resistance. The way the WWII and modern day stories tied together was beautiful, and though Inès’s recklessness really bothered me at times, it came full circle in the end and I appreciated her humanity. Probably more like a 3.5 because her character bothered me at times, but overall a great historical fiction read.

Although I have read a great deal of historical fiction about World War II, this book offered a unique insight into The Resistance movement of that time. I found the story interesting and engaging. I highly recommend this book.

I think I agree with most that the book has a fascinating background, but characters that I just can't get behind. I found it hard to root for anyone because I found 90% of them unkind and unlikeable, and the other 10% boring. On top of it all, I just don't enjoy stories that romanticize infidelity. I see how it can add drama to include it in a plot, but alas. Not for me.

What a story. The hell that people went though during the war is unimaginable. This story is weaved together so perfectly. Pay attention because if you miss something you will be lost. What a woman Inez was. She was thought to be stupid, naive, and bitter. What she did was strong, heroic ans selfless. It is sad that she was unable to tell David the truth. 4.5 stars
