Having to read something from Flannery O'Connor is a dark spot in my high school career.
Awesome book! A collection of short stories with some interesting lessons and in almost all of them I couldn't predict the endings. Definitely worth reading.
"Death, despair, people dying everywhere. Oh-heave-ho. Oh-heave, heave-ho."
~ A burnt out art teacher.
It seems to me that my burnt out art teacher probably had been reading the masterfully written short stories of Flannery O'Connor, for that strange morose song captures the tone of this collection fairly well. None of her stories are really what you might call up-beat, but they are tragically beautiful and a style unique to her alone. They seem to be written so simply and yet they capture a time, a culture, and the shades of human nature through the lightest and harshest of touches. American gothic pure and simple.

Every story in this collection is linked by the ending of each story- the main character getting what they (often rather gruesomely) deserve. My favorite stories were Greenleaf, View of the Woods, and Revelation.

These short stories were so well written, however, I didn’t enjoy it. I guess Southern Gothic is just not my thing.

5 stars for “Everything that Rises Must Converge”
Well written & easy to read.
Stories were a little grim with religious overtones (which is apparently the majority of O'Conner's novels), but still good stories and very interesting to read a stack of short stories from a time in history with massive changes happening, and seeing how these characters react.
Not for everyone but very glad I read it.
