I picked up this book because I loved The Nightingale and The Great Alone, both literary page-turners. So I thought I’d check out the author’s earlier work. And I thought it would be a good holiday read. It was mildly entertaining, but it’s hard to believe it was the same author. This novel was more like a sentimental Hallmark Christmas movie. Halfway through it takes a more serious turn and then it takes another turn into fantasy romance. Since I don’t usually read fantasy or romance genres, I didn’t find it a satisfying book at all. Decently written but not what I expected.
Een kerstverhaal dat ik in één ruk heb uitgelezen. Het voelt alsof je meegevoerd wordt in een sprookje, waarbij je op sommige vragen een antwoord krijgt, terwijl andere vragen een groot mysterie blijven. Al met al een zeer vermakelijk boek.
The author used the word velvet or velvety like 5 times in one chapter. I like the premise but not her best work, in my opinion.

If you typically love Kristin Hannah books, skip this one.
In my opinion, this wasn’t comforting or joyful and I’m still a bit lost overall on my feelings about this book. I see why it has mixed reviews but I’m not upset I read it and I’m still obsessed with Kristen Hannah. ♥️
