I'm not one for short stories but this one gives a lot of insight into the death of Penn's wife... a more in depth look into other reasons why he moved back to Natchez with his daughter...also a great way to set up the opening gambit / storyline to Natchez Burning. A quick but information rich easy engaging read!

I had not read Iles before. And I enjoyed this novella. Penn is a lawyer with integrity who had left the profession and become a writer. This story finds him caring for his dying wife and attempting to set right a case that had been glossed over but that touched his life.

I have read all the books in this series but I had forgotten what had happened. This reminded me, even though I read it out of order. Kind of pointless, but does set up the mystery of The Bone Tree.
