Reunion in Death

J.D. Robb

4.19 AVERAGE

I am giving this one three stars instead of 4 because this was actually a reread from sometime during the pandemic but I didn't remember the book hardly at all. Bits and pieces came back to me and Eve's anger at the the bad guy seemed a little over the top and dumbass to me but mostly these books are kind of fun. I love the steaminess of Eve and Roarke which is basically without angst or at least not about their relationship with each other. That is a big part of the appeal of this series...and also the depth of the full cast. The gore and violence doesn't add much to me but that is OK. I dont think I could do a ton of these in a row and I think Robb writes these faster than I choose to read them but that is OK. Who knows, maybe one day I will catch up-LOL

This one made me really mad, honestly.

This is the second time that Roarke decided he had the right to absolutely stomp on her and her authority in her place of work. To go over her head, collude with her boss, and then dictate to her how her fucking case is going to go. In front of her team. I was so mad I was angry-crying, no joke. And then he made it even worse when he decided HE was the injured party and got all pissy with her for not just doing what he says. Calling her illogical and emotional. Hello, gaslighting.

I wanted Eve to throw her badge into her commander's face, and tell him she gets that cops are a boys club, but she didn't realize that even a boy NOT IN THE CLUB would constantly outrank her. And that if her boss has so little respect for her, both as a lieutenant and a primary, but also personally - when he agrees to wade into this alongside Roarke to enforce that what Roarke wants is what is going to happen - then maybe he should just give Roarke her job.

Nothing Roarke said or did made up for this. And Eve has never - NEVER - shown such a horrible disrespect for him. In front of her whole team, no less! And then it was like ... a running theme after this that Eve was over the top with being pissy and whatever. No, fuck you. Fuck all of you. She was mad for 10 min and then rolled over and forgave all of it.

I don't know if I'm going to continue on with the series, which is a bummer. Because this is the second time he has done this, and I don't see that ever changing - he is going to do it again and again, and it has made me despise him a little bit. I don't know that I believe he loves her, because that was so gross and fucking condescending and disrespectful...how can that be love? How?

Maybe I'll come back after a break, but right now, I sure feel like I won't.

Series In Death by J.D.

I said I wouldn't review any of the books in the series unless is completely blew me away (a 5-star read, essentially) and finally I hit one. We've all known that Eve's past is dark, twisted and sad, but the deeper dive into that past, and the trip to Texas was ROUGH to read. But rough in a really good, not to mention well written, way. It's been awhile since I felt such powerful emotions in one book that's part of such a large series.

Still in love with Eve's and Roarke's relationship as always. Excited to continue and read more!

It's been a few months since I've read a book in the In Death series. I find that I have to take breaks in between otherwise they start to mesh together too much. But it's always nice to come back to the series and the characters. Reunion in Death is no different.

A man is poisoned at his 60th birthday party and no one can figure out why. He was beloved by friends and family. Eve quickly figures out that an old nemesis of hers has been released from prison and is looking to have a little reunion. During the investigation Eve must face more than just her past with the killer, she must face parts of her own past, as well as trying to figure out who the next target could be.

This book does a lot to show the progression of our characters. Roarke and Eve celebrate their one year anniversary if which their wedding took place at the end of book 3 I believe. Peabody gets to close her own case. It's nice to see her growing into her own detective under Eve's direction.

Good addition to the series. Definitely something to keep reading.
