Overall, this was a pretty good book. I only gave it three stars, though, because I absolutely did not like the ending. At. All. It is less of a murder mystery and more of an exploration of spirituality, spiritual growth, cults, and relationships.

This book has one premise and then seems to go in a widely different direction, never really solving the somewhat mystery it first proposes. I guess it is supposed to be somewhat of a satire and commentary on cult-like leaders, but it mostly just falls flat. Pieces of the writing are downright distracting, like the one-sided retelling chapters that are interspersed with unheard questions from another character. Just have the character retell their story without trying to make it seem like a conversation. The ending was downright ridiculous and totally unsatisfying. Finally, I just need to address the cover design - the cover shows a women in front of some body of water with huts surrounding it - this story takes place in the desert. I just can't with that.

I've felt fairly conflicted about this book. I thought a lot of it was pretty terrible, and yet I also found it compulsively readable and enjoyed it in certain ways. The ending was particularly satisfying which brought it up to two stars for me.

Meh. Satire, but not good. And the ending did not fit, even as satire.

2.5* I have no clue what the hell I just read. I mean…I am truly perplexed. I’m splitting the stars in half because due to my confusion I’m not quite sure if this was good or bad. I feel like Dana…just lost.

This book was an easy read and by no means full of shocking surprises, but it kept you interested, following Dana's path through self-recognition and spiral into the darker side of it. I was in need of a book that would cleanse my pallet after reading a lot of heavy books and this one was really great for that.

I was expecting a lot more.

why would she join the cult???

I really enjoyed Soulmates! Jessica Grose is very talented and has created interesting characters and a page-turning plot. More to come.
