I liked this one better than the first book, so that confirms in some ways that my issues were due to first book downfalls. Now, we have the foundation of the world and you are better able to accept and work through new elements of the world as it expands. This book was funnier to me as well, with some jokes really making me laugh out loud. I am appreciating some of the glimpses into backstory that we get from the relationship with Ropa and her mentor Callander. I'm intrigued to know more about that and it's an encouragement to continue with the series. I also liked that this book seems to be getting in the stride of how the series will continue where Ropa gets the opportunity to really flex her investigative skills. We get to see her process and get into her head to know how she is figuring things out and it makes her a more active character and unique in the YA fantasy landscape. She has magic and lives in a world of magic, but she is used to solving her problems with her brains and her refusal to give up. I still think that this story could have been told with an older protagonist. I'm interested to see if the youth of the character comes into play in the world at all. Ropa and her friends are too young to be seeing these horrors and dealing with this big topics, but they are because the world is broken. I would like to see that disconnect and that loss of youth explored more.

Again, I loved Ropa to pieces as a main character. The plot was interesting; I just felt like the end was a tad bit rushed. I love the humor and quirkiness of this series. Such a fun read.

Edinburgh Nights isnt dark academia; its chaos academia. Where dark academia is sophisticated and sorrowful (everyone else in this book), chaos academia is spontaneous and intense (Ropa, Jomo, and Priya). It's reading a book on magical theory as you run out of a burning building. And that is Ropa's story.

And in the most none patronizing, sincere way possible, Ropa Moyo is a good girl. Don't missunderstand, she is absolutely a punk, but she is also 15 yo and undeniably good. She is her families caretaker - she said it herself. And she prioritizes money for her family, and that takea a backburner when it comes to help others and doing the right thing.

I have a feeling I'm missing quite a bit of context just bc I don't know that much about Britain+Scotland. That would explain why the setting in the first book confused the shut out of me. I also think "Library of the Dead" would've fit this book better than the first one, but I get why it was done the way it was. Perhaps the series should've been called that instead.

A solid sequel with a standalone plot - I really enjoyed being back following Ropa Moyo.  Ropa is an unpaid intern, but still needs to pay the bills so is investigating a mysterious illness at the healing house 'Our Lady of Mysterious Ailments' and also working for an American trying to follow a paper trail to restore his family fortune. I love how much personality comes across in the writing style, and Ropa's distinctive vernacular. The world is also really distinctive and feels expansive - like we just get to see a glimpse but there is a lot more going on, which is exactly as it should be. I am still very intrigued to find out more about the 'catastrophe' and was slightly disappointed we didn't find about more in this novel, but I enjoyed seeing more of the Library of the Dead and other magical institutions (although I would have liked a little more development of the magic systems). The characters are also really good fun although there is so much action that it doesn't feel like we get much time for them to just 'be' together (not really a criticism because others will love how action-packed this is but doesn't match my personal taste). I wasn't able to follow the mysteries enough to predict any of the twists and got some names mixed up (could be my fault for multitasking while listening to this on audio), but the plot seemed a little clearer than in the first book which I appreciated. Will be continuing this series!

There was more world-building in this book than the first, and I found the plot much more enticing and complex than the first one. In that way, it was really satisfying. However, there wasn't really much character development for any of the characters, which was too bad. I really enjoyed the first one for its characters, especially the secondary characters. I felt like this book, none of the characters were fleshed out anymore than they had been in the first book and I felt that was a missed opportunity.

Still, this is a fun ride and I'll definitely read the next book, if there is one.

Like the first book in the series, this a good all around fantasy detective story from a unique perspective. I found the pace to be a little slower than ideal for my own reading preferences, but Huchu always delivers on a complex mystery that is deeply interconnected.
