Perfect book to end the year of 2021 with none other than Mariana Zapata. I’ve made it my mission to read all of MZ’s books and this book  was actually published in 2021. Anyways, this book was the epitome of Mountain view’s, beautiful scenery, small town, nature, and much more. In addition, the optimistic Aurora alongside the grumpy Tobias Rhodes.

If there was one word to describe this book it would be, self reflection (technically two words but it’s ok). This story was centered around Aurora getting back to her roots, and rediscovering parts of herself that she had long forgotten, especially parts that revolved around her mom. Aurora was a sweet, optimistic woman who dealt with people who didn’t deserve her kindness, those people being her ex boyfriend and his mother. For all the years that Aurora was with her boyfriend, she was essentially living a life that didn’t benefit her. Sure there were periods of time where Aurora did well in terms of her music career as a songwriter, but personally she wasn’t receiving the genuine love and respect that she one hundred percent deserved. By Aurora going back home to Pagosa, she was able to reconnect with old friends like Clara and meet new friends such as, Amos and of course… Tobias Rhodes.

My initial impression of Rhodes was… Man he sure is one heck of a grumpy man. Rhodes was closed off, stoic, quiet, and reserved. Thankfully as the story progressed, the truth behind why Rhodes was so standoff-ish to Aurora was revealed and it made more sense to the reasoning behind his behavior. As Rhodes got to see and talk to Aurora more, he realized that his first impression of her was incorrect, and grew to appreciate her cheerful attitude, non stop talking, and determination to do the hikes her mother did.

At first glance, I wouldn’t have imagined Aurora and Rhodes together, but by reading more about them, especially them together, it was something that just clicked. While Aurora and Rhodes had some differences, they also had some similarities that they were able to connect over. In addition, seeing Aurora and Amos build a friendship was very sweet and I’m sure Rhodes appreciated Aurora always helping and looking after Amos.

More than anything, this story focused on the journey Aurora went on, going back to where it all started for her, remembering her life with her mother, and feeling genuine happiness that she hadn’t felt in a really long time. In addition, the story focused heavily on nature, the scenery, and the small town that Aurora grew up in. I will say, I’m not much of a nature person, but through reading this book, I was able to appreciate all the details written in by Mariana and I felt like I was transported alongside Aurora while she went hiking (not to mention I felt genuine anxiety and fear whenever something went wrong while Aurora went hiking).

This book delved into a lot of strong themes from the loss of a parent, grief, mental health, self discovery, and love. Aurora’s story was self reflective and at moments I found myself asking questions about my own life. While I don’t have the same experiences as her, I did find myself relating to her in a sense. This was a significant and sweet story, and like always anything by Mariana Zapata is fantastic.

This book is so beautiful. I have always thought that adult romance doesn't suit me but I was wrong. This book shows that I can still enjoy reading it even though I'm 10 years younger than the mc.

It's a slow burn romance but totally worth it. The way Rhodes treated Aurora is just so sweet. Every time I see the word 'angel' and 'buddy' I just can't stop smiling.
