This rating is potentially a sign that I might need to step away from my romantasy reading journey for awhile? This book follows Emmaline Bluestone- Emma- a witch that ran away from the magical world after her fiancé rejected her to live surrounded by humans in Chicago. However, several years later that same fiancé, Bastien Truenote, appears in her bar and wants to pick up right where they left off. However, both are keeping huge secrets/ulterior motives from each other and yet they cannot stay away. Normally, second-chance romance and paranormal romance are right up my alley, but for multiple reasons the execution of this story left me unable to suspend any of my disbelief. Both Bastien and Emma attempt to move past their emotional hurt from the breakup, but their forgiveness does not go deep enough and they act on their feelings without acknowledging the past and despite acknowledging that they continue to withhold substantial details from each other. For once I wasn't disappointed by a third act breakup because I honestly thought it should have happened sooner if either of our romantic leads honestly expressed their wants and needs and pushed for respect. I truly don't know if this couple would continue to have a happy ever after post events in this book. Additionally, some of the side characters-- notably Emma's mother-- are one note antagonists or cheerleaders for the protagonists and it did not help the story to enable these characters when they weren't being open with their needs. The worldbuilidng on the magical setting was very light and aside from the magical engagement tattoo could have easily been replaced with real world class differences. I would consider giving this author another chance given time-- it could just be that these tropes do not fit in her writing wheelhouse.

We all know from the gitgo that fantasy requires a huge helping of "just go with it," but I was a little disturbed in the first few pages when the characters shrug off with a joke the suggestion that one just wipe the memory of a performer who had come to do their job, but oops, the person hiring forgot to pay them. Maybe I'm too old, but I found that not funny at all.

Shortly after that, the hero turns up after dumping the heroine years ago, no explanation, when they were engaged. Does she act like an adult and ask for an explanation before going on? Nope. Yearns and burns, and he goes home and years and burns, and my eyes were rolling so hard that they clanged against the back of my skull.

There was a lot of fun with some of the magic, and I liked some of the characters, but for me this one never quite got past that jolting beginning. And there was more. Anyone think roofies are fun? Even magical?

Yeah, readers who don't find any of that a turnoff should really enjoy an otherwise sprightly, witchy romance.

The author was just writing scenes to give Seb a way to show what a man he was and how good he’d be for the FMC. Boring characters, boring plot

I found myself drawn into this story from the beginning. I found myself relating to the main character, Emma, so much. She's someone who was looked down upon in her family and had a lot of pressure to be good enough, even though she was constantly belittled. This is the story of her blossoming and coming into her own power and confidence, while also finding love. I absolutely loved this story and found elements of it surprising (which is hard to do for me!). Highly recommend for those who love a good romcom.
