The Beholder

Anna Bright

3.52 AVERAGE

The Beholder by Anna Bright is a phenomenal read and definitely lived up to my expectations.

Selah has waited her whole life for a happily ever after. As the daughter of the Seneschal she must find the perfect match that will help her lead her people when the time comes. After she proposes to the young lad she thinks will be THE ONE, he publically rejects her. She doesn't have the time to waste on finding another suitor. Her father is sick pushing her to find a match quickly. Her stepmother has her sent away on a ship destined to multiple locations that will have a potential suitor for her to choose. Schemes, dangers, adventures and a side character I'm hoping will become more than a side character in the next book will keep you enthralled till the very last page. I cannot wait till the next book is in my hands. I was left wanting more and needing to know how this story ends.

It is 3,5* but I round it up because of Torden.♥

This book will not be everyone's cup of tea. At the beginning it is slow paced. Whole book is not much action packed. If I should describe it I would say it is a fantasy romance with parts of retellings in it and I enjoyed it very much. It was nice to watch Selah's charachter development. I did guess some of the plot twist but in these days it is hard to be completly surprised by book, so I did not mind. I did cringe a little with the kind of insta love, but because I love the guy I can go with it. One part of this book broke my ♥ a little but I can't wait how it will develop in the next book, I just hope that it will not go way I think it might go, because I would be pissed. So I will definitely pick up the next book.

Tak jo. Čekala jsem nějaké pořádné námořní dobrodružství. Vedle.

A ten konec?

I actually ended up liking this book a lot more than I thought I would. I mean sure, the main character is pretty basic and somehow falls in love with two people within two weeks each, but it was still a quick, fun read. I did struggle to understand the world though. I believe Potomac is supposed to be the Virginia area(as that’s where the Potomac River is) and that the British abandoned the colonists when they had other issues, so the American Revolution never happened so the US was never created. But that’s all a guess, I feel like it really would have helped if there had been a map of the world included.

As someone who will unashamedly admit to loving the Selection. Seeing that this was compared to the selection and having one of the blurbs by kiera cass, it was an instant add to tbr for me.

I can 100 percent see the similarities. Strong female lead, set to find husband to fulfill family obligations. It gave off that same bachelor vibe as the Selection did but with cool world building and adventures also as the Selection did.

I really loved the characters. Selah was a great lead woman, strong willed and determined. I really liked all the suitors in it as well. They were all very well written and unique which was great to set them apart.

I liked the writing and the travel and adventures, the twists and shocks were good too.

One thing I will say is I listened to the audio and I would recommend not going that route as i really didnt like the narrators take on the characters. I think I will re read before the next book in the series comes out, to refresh and probably get a whole other experience.

I couldn't take seriously a protagonist who developed an immediate crush on every boy her age that she met. Who trusted other people based on looks. Who let the plot happen to her without doing absolutely nothing on her own.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so disappointed in a fairyloot book. So many names, so many characters, such unnecessary plot twists and scenes. The main character was so naive and dumb and I can’t believe how much she ignored. An incredibly frustrating read.
