I didn't know what to expecting going into this story. I thought I had a vague inclining about the plot but I was way off.
In the end I liked the story but the ending left me feeling a little underwhelmed. I thought that this was more of a alternate history book but it's dystopian. There's very little world building, which was why I figured it was AH. But we end the book with a budding rebellion that was never once discussed or hinted at. There is a figurehead that's described as being an overarching villain. So, in the abstract, it doesn't surprise me that there is a rebellion brewing. But I'm just tired of this specific narrative.
I'm going to read the second book as well but so far I'm just fine, not impressed.

Possibly the worst heroine I’ve read about in fantasy literature, she was so fickle she could’ve fallen in love with anyone and did fall in love with multiple people. She was also extremely selfish and weak just annoying
Overall I really enjoyed this book, hence the 4 stars! I got attached to some of these characters so much and really routed for some of the romances. However, it is very YA and therefore I felt the book lacked when it came to the world building. Having read the whole thing I’m still unsure as to how some things work, why things are the way they are because I don’t feel they were properly explained. Oh also, what is it with YA authors and deliberately picking names for people/places that you’re never meant to be able to pronounce/just look silly?
So yes, the world building wasn’t great and I still have some questions. But for a YA book I enjoyed this. It was really quick to read, the romance I got behind easily and it was just a good read. I’ll pick up the next one!

First, I love the cover! The Beholder was amazing and kept me on the edge of my seat. This is one book I'll love to see as a tv show. I can't wait to see what the second book holds!
I enjoyed this book a lot. I found that the main character, Selah, grew quite a bit from a timid girl to a strong woman. I like how at the end she decided to fight for a cause greater that her own future and the future of her home. The only thing with this book is that the romance got a little cheezy at times and there was too much insta love but despite that I enjoyed the book. Though I would really like to see Selah end up with Lang. I felt like they had some chemistry between them but we shall see. Hopefully the next book comes soon!

- I didn't really have any expectations going into this book, I had heard it talked about but I hadn't seen anyone I know read it so I just didn't know what to expect. It's safe to say that I freaking loved it though. It's very rare that I tend to get 'book boyfriends' (that phrase makes me want to throw up but hey ho) these days but holy shit, I would have died for Bear, Captain Lang and especially Torden. I can for sure see myself re-reading this in the future but I will probably use the audiobook version next time I read this because there was definitely words I couldn't even begin to pronounce. I can't wait to get my hands on the second book next month.

I did not expect to love this so much since I despise love triangles, but this was perfect. Selah travels on her ship, The Beholder, to other countries in search of a husband since her step mum wants her gone. She spends a couple of weeks with each of the guys interested, and then moves onto the next if an engagement is not accepted.
↠ favourite parts
-The fairytale elements. It combines all different fairytales, but is mostly a Cinderella retelling.
-Asgard: the Loki and Thor characters
-The family drama, the secrets, the world building
-A certain captain and his obvious unrequited love (will it stay unrequited..I sure fucking hope so)
I didn’t even mind her going from one guy to the other because she found someone better for her.

DNF’d at 64%. Fully agree with the other 1 & 2 stars here— the world-building was all over the place and Selah is just exhausting as an MC. Desperately wanted her to grow as a character but it became very evident that I was hoping for too much. Her decision-making process is guaranteed to ruin the lives of the people of Potomac and everything is a slight to her even though she’s a complete doormat.
All I kept shouting while reading this was WHERE AM I?
Besides that glaring issue the story did get better as the pages went on.
Review to come.
I have a lot of thoughts 😆.
