Wandering and disjointed. Ending came out of nowhere.

It took me a little while to get into this one but once we got to the main part of it, it started to pick up. I especially like the chemistry she had with the final suitor in the book. I am curious to see where we go next in the sequel.

I loved the cute little references to fairy tales and epic poems that you see (I.e. the sailors named Homer and Perrault). I loved the concept of each suitor being a different character in some type of mythology, but that Anna Bright put her own spin on it. I loved that Selah had moments of self doubt and self consciousness, and I loved the friendships that she made along her journey. I love that we see her dedication to her father and grow to hate/fear her stepmother like she does. I like that Selah wasn’t shamed for being attracted to more than one boy. And most of all, I like that though Selah is soft spoken and tries not to rock the boat, she stands up for injustices.

Though Selah was fairly fleshed out, and her relationships were explained well, I wish that the side characters would’ve gotten more development. I was also confused by the geography of the world in this book, and didn’t like that while Selah was sailing across the Atlantic and was wearing gowns, they had radios and she references her unshaved legs, so the time period was difficult for me to narrow down, as well.

I think that this was an interesting concept and while the follow through wasn’t phenomenal, it was entertaining and a solid foundation for (what I hope will be) a fun series.

I need the next book IMMEDIATELY

I predicted pretty much every twist, the main character was basically in love with three different guys 10 seconds after meeting them, and I have no sense of the world this is set in. Potomac is the US I think and England seemed mostly normal, but the Norwegian countries and beyond weren’t well developed at all. What’s the war about? Who is feuding and why??? The pacing was slow and there were a lot of secondary characters, which made it hard for me to keep everyone straight in my head.

2.5/5 Stars: 'The Beholder' is a Young Adult, Historical Romance by Anna Bright; 'The Beholder' embers on an enticing quest, it is a selection box of candy-sweet, fairy-tale tropes. Weaving, in threads, classic stories such as: 'Cinderella', 'Snow White' and 'Beauty and the Beast', as well as, intertwining it with legends and myths of: King Arthur, Saint George, and Odysseus. Given the nature of the plot, the crux of the novel, of course, is the romance. Bright constructs these bachelorette-style relationships well; however, at times, they progressed far too quickly, lacking realism. Considering the small window of time allotted to each suitor, it makes sense it was written in this manner, but it would have benefitted from developing naturally. 'The Beholder' is heavily cliché; lacking action and character development.

Overall, I loved this book! I did a get a bit confused in the world setting with all the different names but I’m looking forward to the next book!
