The seven siblings of the Endless have many stories that could be told about them that would educate and entertain; collected within The Sandman: Endless Nights, written and introduced by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Glenn Fabry, Milo Manara, Miguelaznxo Prado, Frank Quitely, P. Craig Russell, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Barron Storey, are seven short stories that explore one illuminating tale for each of the siblings, expanding upon what readers may know, or presume, about them as truths are brought to the surface.

Beginning with an introduction from Gaiman that outlines the stories to come which are each depicted by different artists, the stage is set for some intriguing tales about each of the Endless siblings in a variety of artistic styles. The shifts in artistic style with each chapter offers visual variety to capture and recapture interest in the stories of varying caliber, as well as portray each of the Endless in distinct ways, such as the stark contrast in color in Death’s chapter that could be argued as demonstrative of each man’s interactions with Death as it points toward how they elect to lead their lives accordingly; the fifteen different portraits of Despair are just that, providing odd visual renditions and stories that evoke a rather unsettling sense of despair. Each of the stories offers insight into the siblings, providing supporting context for the behaviors seen throughout the previous ten volumes of The Sandman, such as why there’s a fission between Dream and Desire, which is a satisfying morsel of information to be aware of for any future rereadings of the previous volumes for that extra layer of context to their strained relationship and interactions.

This volume has convinced me I need to go back and reread Sandman. It was a fun journey into a story featuring each of the Endless, but I really missed the scope and depth of storytelling in the main series. My favorite story here was Dream’s, although he’s kind of off to the sidelines during it. (And, dude, has there ever been a guy as unlucky in love as Dream? Kind of his fault too, though.) As usual I wasn’t Despair’s biggest fan, and I thought Destruction’s story could’ve used a little more, as could Death’s. I liked the concept behind Delirium’s story and Daniel’s appearance (though I was hoping for a little more Danny).

This time around I am going to buy Sandman (rather than checking it out of the library), so reading it will be slower going as I accumulate them. But I am really looking forward to it, and Endless Nights just whetted my appetite.

Cada endless está perfectamente bien construido lo que hace que Despair sea desesperante de leer.

This was a nice collection of short stories related to the Endless, however I was expecting more of each sibling.  Instead, some of the stories felt like the sibling only made a brief appearance, which was a bit of a bummer.  Surprisingly, my favorite was the Portraits of Despair.
