Just super cute all around! Can't say it was a page turner, but it had so many unique components and likable characters (the main one being the adorably brilliant and caring octopus character).
Cameron did frustrate me several times, and Tova a few times, but it was understandable given the circumstances of their life, plus it showed their humanity and flaws.
I think I was satisfied by nearly every outcome of the book. I liked the outcome for Marcellus; I liked the family/community ending; I liked that we get an explanation of what happened to Erik. The only part I didn't love is that Tova ended up selling her house and that Cameron didn't get to spend much time in it.
A heartwarming and original read!

I will DNF a book so fast. I’m talking 2 sentences. This happened the first time I tried to read this. I just wasn’t feeling an octopus narrator. But another thing is, once I DNF, I am very willing to try again if a book comes back on my radar. I’m so glad this one did. It was gorgeous and heartwarming and suspenseful…? I think it would make a great movie.
Some of the “old woman” and “whiny man child” dialogue irked me but, my god, my heart beats for Marcellus.

This was a sweet story and I enjoyed a lot of the characters, but man-child Cameron and some unanswered questions kept me from enjoying this completely.

I accidentally starting reading this book after having mistakenly thought it was ‘The Mountain in the Sea’ - another book including octopi. After the first 10% I realised that this was a very different book.
To sum up this book with a quote from Shelby
“The words seep through him, slow and warm like hot chicken broth on a cold day”
I didn’t intend to buy chicken broth but I’ll be damned if it is isn’t comforting.
