Pretty amateurish. I assume this is Purdy's first novel, and it shows. Hopefully she will get better, but I'm not much interested in reading more at this point. Trite phrasing, poor plot and character development, occasional obvious inconsistencies in the story line, and so forth. It didn't grab me the way a novel should. I read about 20% to give it a chance, then lightly skimmed the rest just to see what happens throughout. It's a bad sign when you can skim (or even skip) dozens of pages at a time without losing any feel for the story. Good thing it was free for my kindle...I would hate to have paid real money for it.

I had a few issues with this book that i had to give it only 2 stars. It was a great concept that Alexia came up with but had too many flaws for me to really enjoy it.

Instant love is really to much to get a reader to except. i for one did not and there was no chance for the chemistry to run the pages. it was instant and just excepted straight away without question even if it was weird. Thought at least the main charactor would go in an uproar as she was all strong willed an all.

Another thing that i noticed was that when there was some action going on somewhere half way in the book the main charactor goes to sleep straight after even though she only woke up a few hours ago. I guess the author didnt know what else to write to continue the scene but to go to sleep.

And the winking what is up with the winking. Its just constant and unneeded in all the scenes. "we will be fine' *wink*, "you're the love of my life" *wink*, "You're hurt" *wink*. Just all the time. Maybe that was one of the side effects of the Vampire Virus?

As i said i loved the concept but too many faults to be entertaining.

1. She meets a guy who tells her that he has Twilight-style imprinted on her and now they're destined to be together forever and she's like, okay I desire you so much. They've met, what, four times?

2. She's the only free human left - oh wait, she's not a human but a super hybrid vampire? A very rare breed. Immensely powerful! Super human! A vampire’s strengths but none of their weaknesses! Capable of not just killing a hybrid but doing that without breaking a sweat!

3. She literally rips the heart of her opponent out?!

4. Since when does the enemy you just managed to kill humbly admit your superiority in his last breath?

“You know what, April?” His voice came out raspy and tense, as if his lungs could not bear the stress of speaking. -- “I thought humans were all dead. I thought they were the weakest of us all. But you aren't the weakest. You’ll be the last of us to walk this earth. You’ll be all
alone, with no one else, the fittest of the fit.”

This was another quick read that i got free from amazon for my kindle. It's a YA book, and of course, the world as we know it has ended. There was a "vampire" outbreak but it seems more like a zombie outbreak. April has survived, along with her mom and little brother, but they get kidnapped by who knows who and April must find them and survive. More things happen, but I don't want to give any spoilers. Just suffice to say that by the end, it didn't seem like the end. I had to know what happened...so i quickly downloaded the second in the series! The only thing I did not like about the book is that the writing style is a bit odd sometimes. She'll go into great detail for a while, then when something that seems like it would be important happens that they've been leading up to forever, she skips over it, and then later goes oh ya that happened. Like oh we're waiting for xmas, detail detail about waiting, then suddenly and yes, three days ago xmas happened. But no details or showing it actually happening. Plus April takes things in stride that would usually require a bit of adjustment, then things that would usually be normal, she obsesses over. Overall this was a great book because it draws you right in. Can't wait to read more of this series.

I enjoyed this although as it went on I liked it less than I did at the beginning. There was an interesting premise with the different types of vampires, which I liked but my main issue was that there seemed to be a lot of build up to certain events and then you were told what happened rather than reading it for yourself.
The ending was also a slight let down... the violent climax was great, but there was no follow though.
I do want to read the rest of the series (when they come out), I just hope the writing is slightly better... the story was really good though.

I received this book as part of The Nexus read and review program. A year ago a vampire outbreak wiped out most of the humans, leaving behind a savage vampire. Aprils family raced for the mountains before the outbreak got bad, while other's weren't so lucky. For the last year April has trained going from a carefree teenager to a vampire hunter. Life is simple, protect her family, train, gather supplies in Las Vegas during the day.

Over the last year April has become a lethal fighter easily wiping out all vampires she's come across, but they aren't the vampires in books and movie. These vampires have lost the intelligence in their eyes, their humanity is gone all that is left is a savage shell that hunts humans. Having long ago killed almost all the humans, they wiped out most of the animals as well, not they are withered starving creatures.

Suddenly a routine trip goes wrong, April finds herself alone, her family taken, something that the vampires she's been killing wouldn't do. Now she has to find them, before it's too late. With the setting sun she's forced back to the cabin in the woods, doomed to wait out the night before she can continue her search. April is intent on finding her family, as the last of the humans shes alone against the masses of feral vampires, but with some new friends, even a chance at love they will risk it all to save her family.

I loved this book. I feel that the book is well written and did an excellent job of drawing me in with a prefect balance between action and emotions. I've always been a sucker for vampires, but that was before the sparkly twilight vampires too. This one book has a unique twist on the vampires their are three different mutations of the vampires virus. There is a good amount of action it just draws you in right from the start, plus April is so likable that I found I wasn't reading I was thinking about April. As I read I feel like I was there too, with April and I love a book that can make me feel like I'm there, that's the best part.

I like April's character she's your girl next door who enjoys her trips to the sporting goods store in hopes of finding new weapons. She watches videos to learn new fighting styles, and trains with all her weapons, though the machetes are her preferred for vampires. Guns are out because they can draw unwanted attention from other vampires, so April is well skilled in hand to hand combat.

The book is full of descriptions giving you the feel like your almost there with April on her journey. I enjoyed reading about the characters in the book, even the new ones the hybrids held the mystery for me. April meets a Rye a vampire hybrid who she connects with along the way. I like the vampire bonding in the story it's unique, and I liked that April wasn't alone. I also want more.

Oookay. This book... was sort of odd. Love story was rushed, like so often happens in ya books. Ending was quick and sort of left me wanting for something more. There were several inconsistencies and odd time gaps, a common occurrence in self-published books.

In any case this book was a highly enjoyable read. Apart from the occasional breakdown April earns the rank of a kickass heroine and that's always good.

This is a good beginning to what I hope will be a great series. For most of the book the main character April seems a little torn between being a tough, independent bad ass and a young confused girl who doesn't know what she is doing most of the time. Then towards the end she starts to finds her purpose but I still feel the insecurities in her actions. I would love to watch this character grow into herself!

The love story: I personally hate insta-love but can handle it in a fantasy setting. What I didn't love was that there was no build up or anything that made you understand this instant love. Neither of the characters seemed to feel a mental attraction to each other, it felt like they loved each other because the author said so more than showing us why. I would have loved to see a little more build up and another short scene or two where these characters get to know each other and we get to know their thoughts so we could feel the attraction a little more (if that makes sense).

I loved the story line, I like that it was different and almost like a zombie/vampire mix. This story doesn't leave you with a cliffhanger, more of an opening for what comes next which is a huge plus for me!

Narration.... I hate to say this but I am so confused by the way I feel about the narration! In the very beginning I thought I was going to hate it, she seemed a little high-strung and the recording seemed to have a little echo but as the story progressed it felt like she started to understand the characters more and did a much better job at hitting the right tones for the scenes. Her narrative voice was great through 90% of this book. The narration as a whole just felt a little uneven I guess.

I will be continuing on to book 2, so don't let my criticisms fool you, I generally liked this book
