Fiery prose that crackles with passion, singing for humanity and caterwauling its laments... and yet it took me three years to bother finishing. Like I get it Vicky, you're really obsessed with your world-building and to your credit it's so expansive you've almost convinced me France is a real place. At least Tolkien had the good sense to stuff the more tedious bits in the appendices. I would however read a whole book series set in the sewers.

I have finished reading this now.
I stand by my previous comment about the long-winded episodes of irrelevant and tiresome descriptions. I love rereading books but I think this one will have to wait a decade or two before I pick it up again. It takes a lot of patience.
However, I can't dislike this book. I rate it with outmost respect 4 stars, with episodes of 2 stars, if that had been possible.

Long winding path of a story, very touching.
a diabolical amount of filler in this book
there are 4+ 40+ page chapters of "history" where the author says "for this we need to learn some background" No we do not. Never once has those history lessons been required to understand anything. you can skip them easily. I'll probably read the abridged version, its crazy how the original is 1.4k pages and my abridged is only 400~ pages lol
