This Audio book was an abridgment so many of the nuances were not included. By finishing this book I am able to discern the main features and I still have a taste for the full length masterpiece that is yet to be read by me at another date. So why did I read this particular version? I don't know. It went quick since I was able to listen in 3, 4, and 5 hour segments. Nothing lost nothing gained. I'll at least say for it that it was better then the movies I've seen and not better than the play.

Les Miserables is a romantic novel. packed with exciting incidents. It is also a sociological study of poverty and slum life. Victor Hugo spent fourteen years on the book. a fact which probably accounts for the numerous digressions and additions to the story. The core of this extremely long novel is the life story of a criminal, Jean Valjean, who serves as an example of the misery and contradictions of society with which the author was especially concerned at the time of writing. Les Miserables is both a powerful social document and an extremely interesting and dramatic narrative. Hugo's masterpiece. it is one of the great novels of the world.

I am terrible at choosing favorites. For anything. But this is the best book I have ever read in my life. For so many reasons. It broke my heart in a way that needed to be broken. And it gave me joy that I can’t explain.
