A fantastic read. Perhaps it would be a five star read if I was more fully prepared with a better understanding of French history. I’ll set a goal of reading this again after doing my due diligence.

This was a fascinating read. The humor often works, and it was a deeply humanist book, often surprisingly progressive.
I found Hugo 's often derided distractions and asides fascinating.

The characterization is great and Hugo knows how to tug the heartstrings. He also frequently interrupts his own narrative with lengthy asides and political polemics, which should probably exist as their own separate essays? It's a worthwhile undertaking for classic lit people, but I think I like it better as a musical.

First of all, Marius ruined this entire book for me. I strongly believe without Hugo's long ass tangents about semi-irrelevant topics this would be a 5 star book for me. I was sobbing over Fantine, especially when I re-listened to "I Dreamed a Dream" with the newfound knowledge of Fantine's backstory. Any time a book makes me cry it's an automatic 5 stars but... Not this one. Sorry. Not this one.
