That's actually a "kids version" for this book, but still amazing!!

Only realised I was reading the abridged version when I was already halfway through 😭😭😭 I wanted to hear Hugo’s stupid 30 page long essays and descriptions. He’s a little passionate guy.

Uh anyways great book, so interesting to see his change in perspective on the value of human life from The Hunchback to this. No human life is meaningless, “my mother is the republic”, no person is truly bad or truly good, you are only who you choose to be.

Love that he shouts out himself and his uncle. Hugo has the biggest ego biggest me me me energy but I love him for it he’s so cool and funny and charming and clever. Love this book

3.5/5 On one hand, so many tangents. On the other hand, sometimes the tangents paid off in really cool ways. On one hand, pretty much everyone was a shallow jerk. On the other hand, Jean Valjean was a great guy... in some senses. (Also Cosette was too shallow to be a jerk, so that’s neutral I guess?). It was big! It was sprawling! The female characterization was terrible! It was funny at times! Therefore, mixed feelings.

Even in translation, Hugo's sense of language and the human condition is incredible. Though it's a little sad to say, this book will always be full of themes relevant to modern day. If you can commit to reading it (or listening to the audiobook), do so.
